Stop Resisting, Start Growing

“You cannot grow unless you are willing to change.”

Go ahead and read that again. Slower this time. Maybe even out loud. Sound dramatic while you do it, it deserves it.

Change for triathletes

Yep. That’s the whole secret. Want to be faster? Fitter? Less like a flaming garbage can at mile 9 of your next race? You’re gonna need to do something different.

And I don’t mean switching your socks or buying the new carbon shoes (though if they give you confidence, by all means, fly, you fancy-footed gazelle). I’m talking about the real kind of change, the kind that requires vulnerability, honesty, and usually, a little discomfort.

Here’s the deal: your body (and brain) loves efficiency. It wants to do what it already knows how to do. It wants to ride the trainer at the same intensity every week, follow the same loop for every long run, and avoid strength training like it’s contagious. It wants to stay safe.

But “safe” is not where the growth lives.

Growth lives in the “ugh, this is hard” zone. It hangs out right next to “why am I so bad at this” and “this feels awkward.” And you can’t access any of that unless you’re willing to change.

What Does Change Look Like?

Change might mean:

  • Committing to drills that make you feel like a baby deer in the pool.

  • Actually doing your Zone 2 runs in Zone 2 (yes, really).

  • Adjusting your nutrition strategy even though you've convinced yourself your gut is made of steel.

  • Saying yes to strength work, mobility, and sleep, even when Netflix and doomscrolling are calling your name.

Sometimes the change is mental. You’ve got a fixed mindset whispering, “This is just how I am.” Well, newsflash, “just how you are” isn’t a diagnosis, it’s a choice. And it’s one you can rewrite.

But… What If I Don’t Like Change?

Nobody likes change. That’s why it works. It interrupts the cycle. It challenges the status quo. It introduces friction: and that friction? That’s where you get stronger.

Whenever someone says the words “resistance” or “discomfort,” I don’t hear failure. I hear opportunity.

You don’t have to love it. But you do have to lean into it. Because the version of you who PRs your next race, Loose that next 10 pounds, nails that open water swim, or climbs that damn hill without blowing up: that version doesn’t come from comfort. That version comes from change.

Still Not Convinced?

If this is making you squirm a little, that’s good. It means it matters. And if you’re ready to take it deeper, I wrote a post that breaks down how adopting a growth mindset can literally rewire your performance. Spoiler alert: it involves actual science and a lot of honest self-reflection.

Because here’s the truth: You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be fearless. You just have to be willing.

So the next time your coach suggests something new, something weird, something hard, ask yourself:

“Am I willing to change?”

"Am I open to something new and different?"

Because if the answer is yes — then growth is inevitable.

If this post gave you a gentle (or not-so-gentle) nudge in the right direction, do us both a favor:

  • Share it with a training buddy who needs to hear it

  • Subscribe to the blog so you never miss a mindset or training wake-up call

Because growth doesn’t happen alone — and neither does change. Let’s do the hard stuff together.

*Time Trial Tuesday posts are intended to be short primer posts to get you thinking, but they are also challenges for myself to see how quickly and simply I can get the topic across to all of you. I give myself 15 minutes on the clock to write each one. No filter, No editing, Just the thoughts in my head..... Scary.
