Let me start by telling you, in the kindest of terms: I truly, from the bottom of my heart, hope you fail!
Did that hurt your feelings?
If so, you should definitely keep reading, because you might be missing out on one of the most valuable tools in helping you achieve more!
As endurance athletes, we’re wired to push ourselves to succeed. But what happens when we fall short? What happens when we fail? And more importantly, what happens when we avoid failure altogether?
The truth is, FAILURE IS GOOD. We should be seeking out failure! Instead, the age of digital results, online race reports, #MedalMondays, and Strava has caused many athletes to play it safe and avoid risking catastrophic failure.
Here’s the thing: failure teaches us more than success ever will. Whether it's a tough training session where you couldn’t hit your targets, a race where you bonked hard, or missing a PR by seconds—every setback carries a lesson. It's in these moments of frustration and disappointment that we find opportunities to grow.
Why is failure so valuable?
Failure Exposes Weaknesses
When things go perfectly, we rarely stop to analyze what needs improvement. But when we fail, it forces us to confront our weaknesses—whether it’s pacing, nutrition, mental resilience, or recovery. These are the cracks we can repair to become stronger athletes.
Failure Builds Mental Toughness
Endurance sports are as much mental as they are physical. Every failure is a test of resilience. Will you bounce back, learn from it, and get stronger? Failure sharpens that mental edge and prepares you for the next challenge.
Failure Fuels Growth
Each failure is an opportunity to adapt. It pushes us to refine our training plans, tweak our strategy, and adjust our mindset. Progress isn’t linear, but failure propels us forward, often faster than success.
As athletes, we need to embrace failure, not fear it. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s where real progress happens. Each stumble is a step toward mastering your craft and becoming a better version of yourself.
So, get out there and FAIL MORE!
Fail spectacularly, fail hilariously—I don’t care how it happens, but test the edges and find some more damn failure. You’ll thank yourself later!
*Time Trial Tuesday posts are intended to be short primer posts to get you thinking, but they are also challenges for myself to see how quickly and simply I can get the topic across to all of you. I give myself 5 minutes on the clock to write each one. No filter, No editing, Just the thoughts in my head..... Scary.
