Be Race Ready: Riding and the Rain

Let’s talk about something that might make you a little uncomfortable, kind of like riding in a soggy chamois: you need to be prepared to race in the rain.

Yep. Like it or not, race day doesn’t care about your weather app, your gear preferences, or your perfectly curated playlists. If it’s raining, you still line up. And if you're not ready to ride confidently and competently on slick roads, you're at a disadvantage before you even clip in.

But here's the catch, and it's a BIG one:

Race day prep does not mean training dangerously.

Race in the Rain. Train with Your Brain.

Let me be very clear. I do not recommend heading out on busy, open roads during a storm to “toughen up” or “simulate race day.” That’s not courageous. It’s careless. Wet roads, low visibility, unpredictable drivers, those are not conditions we should be dealing with in training when our number one job is to build fitness safely and consistently.

There’s a time and place to get comfortable on a bike in wet conditions, and we’re going to talk about how to do that smartly.

Bike in the rain

Why You Need to Be Rain-Ready

Rain changes everything about how your bike handles. Braking is slower, cornering is sketchier, and traction becomes something you manage, not expect.

If the first time you’ve ever cornered on wet pavement is during a race, you’re either going to back off way too much and lose time… or risk losing control. Neither is good.

Plus, mentally, being ready for rain makes a huge difference. You won’t be the athlete looking at the clouds and panicking. You’ll be the one calmly adjusting tire pressure, grabbing the right gear, and making smart choices while others scramble.

How to Train for Rain Safely

Here’s how we approach it:

Practice in Controlled Environments Empty parking lots, closed bike paths, or low-traffic loops are your go-to options if you want to practice riding in wet conditions. Focus on gentle braking, cautious cornering, and gear selection. Ride slower. Stay alert. Build confidence.

Know Your Equipment Rain gear isn’t just a luxury. It’s part of the race-day checklist. Know how your bike handles with a wet chain and soaked brake tracks. Know how to keep your glasses from fogging up. Know which tires you can trust. This only comes with experience.

Use the Trainer to Build Fitness When the Roads Aren’t Safe If it’s storming, dark, or just not safe out there, your indoor trainer is your best friend. You can still get high-quality work in safely and keep your progress rolling without risking your skin.

Dial in Your Mental Game Rainy rides test your mental toughness. So simulate that in other ways like indoor intervals with the fan off and no music, or doing brick sessions in less-than-perfect weather (on foot). Build your adaptability muscle.

Final Thoughts: Race Smart, Train Smarter

It’s not about being fearless. It’s about being prepared.

I want every athlete I coach to feel like they can handle anything race day throws at them. Sun, wind, or sideways rain. But I also want every athlete to get to that start line healthy, safe, and consistent in their training.

So yes, learn how to ride in the rain. But don’t be the one dodging potholes and SUVs on a wet Wednesday just to prove a point.

We ride hard. We train smart. And we race like we’re ready for anything.
