If it's good enough for the Olympics, it's good enough for you!
In recent decades, there has been a consistent trend in endurance sports, with age group athletes often seeking the next challenge by moving to longer race distances, rather than focusing on getting faster and racing harder in shorter disciplines. However, I argue that this isn't always the most challenging or best option for everyone. We should place more emphasis on short, incredibly challenging events like the sprint triathlon , 5k and 10k run and Olympic distance triathlon.
No one would ever say that an Olympic gold medalist in triathlon isn't an incredible athlete just because they haven't raced an IRONMAN, and no one would say Grant Fischer (US Olympic 5k and 10k runner) is not a stellar athlete because he “ONLY” runs the 5k and 10k not the marathon. So why do we feel the need to skip over or look past the shooter disciplines in the age group ranks and commonly look to take our next step in triathlon or running by going longer?
It's incredibly hard work to get faster in your sport, and it's especially challenging to improve at shorter distances. You have to work your butt off. A sprint or Olympic triathlon isn't "just" a shorter race—these events are exceptionally difficult if you set your goals high and train properly for them.
I'm not saying that longer races don't have their place in the racing world; for some, they might be the right target. But for many, there is an incredible challenge waiting for you at the shorter distances!
*Time Trial Tuesday posts are intended to be short primer posts to get you thinking, but they are also challenges for myself to see how quickly and simply I can get the topic across to all of you. I give myself 5 minutes on the clock to write each one. No filter, No editing, Just the thoughts in my head..... Scary.
