This topic has been on my mind a lot lately, and I think it's quite important. So let's see how much of it I can cover in 5 minutes!
3....2....1..... Go.
Oftentimes, we think of training and racing as just a component of our lives—a part of our day that is separate from the rest day and distinct from other responsibilities. However, in my experience, as a triathlon and running coach, training and racing are far more than just physical endeavors. They are powerful tools that can enhance every aspect of our lives..
The obvious benefit is that training improves our physical health. Consistent exercise enhances endurance, strength, and overall fitness. But the benefits extend beyond the physical. The process of engaging in structured training for an event also helps athletes develop skills that will make them more effective at pursuits outside of the scope of their immediate racing goals. Time management skills, mental focus, self awareness, and decision making skills are just some of the things you might find improved with a little attention to the details of what is going on inside your head.Â
By rethinking training as more than just preparation for race day, we unlock a broader spectrum of self-improvement opportunities. Now we can see training and racing is and can be a tool to help us become better parents, employees, bosses, friends, etc.. This holistic approach to training fosters growth that transcends the racecourse, impacting every area of life.
As a coach, my mission goes beyond achieving peak athletic performance. I aim to use exercise and training to help athletes grow into the best versions of themselves. The journey of preparing for a triathlon or running event provides invaluable lessons in perseverance, motivation, and personal development. These lessons are applicable far beyond athletic pursuits, enhancing overall well-being and life satisfaction.
*Time Trial Tuesday posts are intended to be short primer posts to get you thinking, but they are also challenges for myself to see how quickly and simply I can get the topic across to all of you. I give myself 5 minutes on the clock to write each one. No filter, No editing, Just the thoughts in my head..... Scary.
